06/18/2012

Even with the rain cancelling some games over the weekend there was still plenty of action for some Northeast Kansas League teams over the weekend. The rain did postpone the Nebraska/Kansas Seniors Border Battle tournament that Holton and Doniphan County were scheduled to partake in.

Seneca wins Hiawatha Tritsch Tournament

Four teams competed in the Hiawatha Tristsch tournament this year, with three of those being Northeast Kansas League teams, along with Marysville.

Friday night the four-team tournament got underway in Hiawatha with Seneca sneaking away with a 4-3 thrilling win over Atchison, who Seneca had downed 5-0 two days before. Atchison kept the game close despite only having nine players at the disposal for the matchup.

The second game wasn’t as close in the final score at least, as Hiawatha took on Marysville. Marysville came away with a 14-4 win after a nine-run fifth inning. Marysville got out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but Hiawatha made a comeback to pull within one-run 5-4 after four. That’s when Marysville opened things up with nine-runs to end the game after Hiawatha failed to counter with runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Cody Keter, was the only Marysville player to tally a multi-hit game going 2-2 with three RBI’s and a run scored. Garrett Eck had three RBI’s also with a pair of runs scored and one-hit. Hiawatha’s offense struggled but was able to plate four runs on only two-hits and five walks; Parker Hasenkamp and Brendan Steele each had a hit.

That set up an Atchison vs. Hiawatha third place game and a Marysville vs. Seneca championship game slated for Saturday. After being rained out on Saturday the teams got the games in on Sunday at Noble Park in Hiawatha.

Action started with Atchison and Hiawatha and it was a good one. It was a game of offense with 18 total hits between the teams and each team scoring in every half inning but three. Atchison took the lead in the top of the first 1-0 and that would be the only time that they would lead in the game, as Hiawatha plated two of their own runs in the bottom of the first. The third things opened up for Hiawatha as they scored four-runs all with two outs; Taylor Jacobsen had a three-run double in the inning. Atchison would answer with runs throughout the game but Hiawatha would counter punch with runs of their own including another four-run inning coming in the sixth. Hiawatha ultimately out bested Atchison 13-8 for their first victory of the season.

Hunter Olberding and Jake Sowers each had a multi-hit game for Atchison going 2-4 on the night each. For Hiawatha, Jeff Costa, Dakota Bayles and Marshall Swearingen had seven of the teams 11 hits. Costa went 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored, Bayles was 2-4 with two runs scored and Swearingen was 2-3 with two runs scored.

Hiawatha finished the tournament 1-1, with a 1-14 record now on the season. Hiawatha will next been in action tonight in a double-header versus Valley Falls at 6:00 and 8:00pm at Noble field. Atchison after two losses falls to 5-6 on the season and will next be in action in the Doniphan County Tournament versus Rock Creek on Thursday at 6:00pm in Wathena.

The championship game proved to be a higher scoring matchup and a slugfest, just like the third place game as Seneca came away with its second regular season tournament crown this year with an 11-9 win over Marysville.

Seneca now is 10-3 on the season and will play tonight on the road at Falls City at 8:00pm (Jr. Legion before at 6:00pm).

Royal Valley Goes 1-2 in Wamego Tournament

It was a battle of one run games for Royal Valley throughout the Wamego Tournament and unfortunately for them they only came out on the right side of one of them going 1-2 in their three games in the the tournament action.

In the first game Royal Valley played in the tournament they jumped out to an early lead plating two in the first and one in the third, to lead it 3-0 going into the bottom of the second. Manhattan would get one back in the bottom of the second, but Royal Valley would add it's final and crucial run in the fifth to lead 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Manhattan tired their best to comeback plating a run in the fifth and sixth, but ultimately Royal Valley held tightly to their lead and pulled out the 4-3, one run win.

The other two games didn't work out quite as well for the Royal Valley squad both ending by a one run margin in favor of their opponent. After beating Manhattan next up was Silver Lake who took the early lead against Royal Valley leading it 3-0 after two innings. But, Royal Valley would respond with a three run third inning, as they capitalized on the some free passes, then got a timely two-RBI double by Erich Weidmann, along with a RBI-single from Austin McClane to tie the game. It would be tied at end of seven forcing extra innings. Royal Valley would be done in by a costly error that gave Silver Lake a runner in the bottom of the eighth that came around to score the winning run, as Silver Lake notched the 4-3 win.

The final game of the Wamego tournament for Royal Valley was against the host Wamego and yet again Royal Valley found themselves in a barn burner. The Panthers pounced on Wamego early plating six runs in the first inning, but it would be the methodical Wamego squad fight back scoring two runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings and one run each in the second and third. Royal Valley would tally two more themselves in the fifth, but after five whole innings the game was tied 8-8. It would come down to the bottom of the seven when Wamego came up big enough to notch the winning run and 9-8 victory.
