Northeast Kansas League Legion baseball roundup from June 6th. All the teams were in action last night in the league in a single game or a double header. Full update on the Northeast Kansas League standings (click here)

Doniphan County took down Holton 11-8

Despite issuing 14 free passes (12 walks and two hit batters) to Holton, Doniphan County was able to conjure up enough offense to hold on for the 11-8 road victory. Derek Nold and Zach Halter provided the most punch with the bat for Doniphan County on the evening each belting a two-run home run. Halter, also earned himself the pitching win, after coming in, in relief for Derek Nold. Cody Bennett finished off the game for Doniphan County, pitching the final two innings for the save.

Doniphan County improved to 3-6 (2-2 league) on the season with the win, while Holton moved to 3-3 (2-1 league). Doniphan County will play a non-league double header next at home versus Ottawa on Saturday the at noon and 2:00pm. Up next for Holton is a double header, also as they play host to non-league opponent Silver Lake this evening at 6:00 and 8:00pm.

 

Atchison took down Frankfort at home

Atchison after taking third place in the NEK League Preseason tournament, made it two wins in a row by downing Frankfort at home on the diamond (score not report yet).

With the win Atchison moves to 3-3 (1-2 league) on the season; while Frankfort falls to 3-3 (2-1 league) with the loss. Up next for Atchison a double header at home against league opponent Hiawatha on Sunday (4:00 and 6:00pm). For Frankfort they will participate in their second tournament this season, as they start play in the Marysville tournament with a match up against Republic County in the first round tonight at 7:00pm.

 

Royal Valley sweeps Hiawatha in DH 4-3 & 12-3

It was a double header sweep for Royal Valley at Noble park in Hiawatha last night. Game one was a tight ball all the way through. Royal Valley struck first with taking a early 2-0 lead through the first few innings, but Hiawatha wouldn't be counted out has they plated three-runs in the third to take the lead, after Dalton Lehmuhkl, Brendon Steele and Dakota Bayles sparked the offense in the inning with hits. Royal Valley would respond tying the game up in the fourth, then scoring the go ahead run off an error in the fifth. Josh Tessendorf and Gino Vicchiullo each had a pair of hits for Royal Valley; while Dalton Lehmuhkl had the best game for Hiawatha 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. 

Game two was a different story for Hiawatha has they were plagued by five errors; Royal Valley capitalized upon the errors on the errors to help them tallying their 12 runs in the 12-3 victory. Craig Thurber earned the win for Royal Valley. Erhart was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's in the game for Royal Valley, while Hiawatha had five hits as a team in the second game.

Royal Valley with the double header sweep improved to 4-4 (1-3 league) on the season, while Hiawatha is still in search of their first win of the season at 0-7 (0-3 league). Royal Valley will be in action next against Rock Creek in a non-league double header on Sunday at 1:00 and 4:00pm, as they will host Rock Creek. For Hiawatha their next matchup will be Sunday also at home at Noble park, as they are slated for double header against league opponent Atchison at 4:00 and 6:00pm.

 

Sabetha takes a pair from Seneca 11-3 & 8-0

The two teams meet up for a rematch of the NEK League Preseason tournament championship, in which Seneca won 11-3. This time it was Sabetha on the other end of the score, turning the tables on Seneca winning the first game of the double header at Somerset park by a score of 11-3, run-rule in the fifth inning. The game was almost a mirror image of the championship tournament game, just with the stats and score flip-flopped. Sabetha finished with 11 runs on nine hits, leaving seven on base and using a big seven-run inning to break things open; as Seneca's final line for the championship win was 11 runs on 9 hits with seven left on base, using  a big six-run inning to break the game open.

Seneca finished the loss with a very similar line to Sabetha in their loss in the championship game, also. Final line for Seneca three runs on three hits with five left on base; while Sabetha's line in the loss was three runs on three hits with three left on base. It was a multi-hit night for Nolan Keim, Thaine Allen and Graham Droge who each enjoyed a successful game one and overall night. Keim finished 2-3 with two runs scored, Allen 2-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a HBP and Droge went 3-3 with a run scored and RBI. Graham Howard earned the win going all five innings giving up only the three hits and three runs.

For Seneca their three hits came from Zach Rottinghaus, Michael Ohlsen and Curtus Stallbaumer. Both teams were missing players on the night as Seneca was without Eric Huerter and Cody Heiman, while Sabetha was missing Tate Steinlage.

In game two the offensive output continued for Sabetha, pounding out 11 hits to Seneca's three in a five inning 8-0 win. Droge who had a hot bat in the first game earned the win on the mound going five shutout innings giving up three hits and four walks, while striking out three. Keim had himself another multi-hit game going 2-3 with two runs scored, while Riley Wells and Benji Stoller each tabbed two hits themselves, also in game two. Wells finished 2-2 with two RBI and a walk, while Stoller was 2-2 with a run scored, two RBI  and a walk. Michael Rottinghaus, Dustin Deters and Zach Rottinghaus registered the only Seneca hits in game 2.

With the two wins Sabetha improves to 9-2 (4-0 league) on the season; while Seneca suffers their first losses of the season falling to 5-2 (2-2 league) on the season. Up next for Seneca is a non-league matchup with Fairbury, Neb. as part of the Marysville tournament, coming up tomorrow at 6:00pm. For Seneca their next game will a double header at home versus league opponent Doniphan County on Sunday at 4:00 and 6:00pm.
