The 2011 Missouri River flood in Nebraska is featured in the latest edition of a statewide magazine.
In a 26-page feature titled, “The Great Flood of 2011,” Nebraska Life Magazine Assistant Editor Alan Bartels and staff writer Matthew Spencer tell the stories of people along the Missouri River in Nebraska who were affected by the flood.
Bartels says the flood was one of the worst in the state’s history, and the magazine wanted to tell its readers about an event that impacted so many people in the state. He says the nature of the flood sets it apart from others in the past (play audio :37)
The magazine article includes 17 stories of people along the river from northeast Nebraska to Falls City. (play audio :41)
The article also includes information on flooding of the Platte River in Nebraska, as well as two dozen photographs that show the scope of the high water and damage the flooding caused. Bartels says he was struck by the community spirit of people along the river, who came together to protect lives and property during the height of the flood. (play audio :33)
With the flood nearly one year in the past, Bartels says they have considered doing a follow-up article focusing on flood recovery. (play audio :24)
