The Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development plans to seek a state grant for a proposed specialty crops project in the county.
Don Nigus and Gene Hillyer with HFED met with Brown County Commissioners today ( Monday ) to discuss the proposed “Postage Stamp Produce Production” project and seek a letter of support for the grant application.
Nigus says access to healthy foods has been identified as a problem in the county.
Nigus proposed using some of the tracts of land that didn’t sell at the recent delinquent county tax sale to plant a variety of specialty crops.....( play audio )
Under the proposal, Nigus said ownership of the properties to be used for the project would be transferred to a Unified Government Land Bank...( play audio )
Nigus says they are looking at applying for a $40,000 to $45,000 grant for the project.
If the grant is successful, he said someone would be hired to manage the program.
Commissioners said they thought the proposed project was a good idea, but would like to talk to County Attorney Kevin Hill about the legalities.
Commissioners are expected to sign a letter of support for the grant application at their meeting next Monday.
