You may have known him as “Water Truck Chuck,” the name the lifetime Horton resident went by because of his service to the community.
His real name was Charles LeRoy Merz, who died Tuesday at the age of 74.
A well known resident of Horton, “Water Truck Chuck” earned that name by serving as the Utility Supervisor in the Water Department for the City of Horton for over 41 years.
So well known, and respected for his time in the position, the City retired Merz’s call number, 73, following his retirement.
Along with that role, Merz had also spent time in the United States Marine Corp, going to work for the city, after receiving an honorable discharge.
Merz also served as a local Boy Scout Leader.
He leaves behind his wife, Shirley, along with numerous other relatives. Services for Merz will be Thursday at Horton’s Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary.
