The Highland Community College baseball team resumed conference play traveling to Johnson County Community College for a week-end series. On Friday, Johnson County used the big inning in defeating HCC 9-6 and 7-5, to sweep the doubleheader, but on Saturday, the Scotties returned the favor, defeating the Cavaliers 18-7 and 5-1.
In game one, after HCC scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead, Johnson County turned a two-out walk into a five-run inning, and a 7-4 lead. Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO) had RBI hits in the fourth and sixth innings as the Scotties closed the gap to 7-6, but the Cavaliers used a single, a triple, and a sacrifice fly to add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, and go on to a 9-6 win. Monty and Craig Hill (Morris, OK) had two hits each for HCC.
In game two, Johnson County used a walk and five singles in the bottom of the fifth inning to score five runs and to break open a 2-2 tie, and take a 7-2 lead. HCC tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning on singles by Hill and Monty, and then Tyler Goldsberry (Papillion, NE) hit a two run triple. Goldsberry scored on an RBI ground out by Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) to make the score 7-5, but were unable to continue the rally. Goldsberry had three hits in the contest to lead HCC hitters. Monty and Hill had two hits each.
In game one on Saturday, the Scottie bats exploded for twenty-one hits, including ten extra-base hits and got solid relief pitching from Seneca natives Tegan Seitz and Derek Rottinghaus as the Scotties blasted Johnson County 18-7. After the Cavaliers scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-3 lead, HCC scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, four runs in the sixth inning, and five runs in the seventh inning, while Seitz and Rottinghaus kept Johnson County from scoring, giving the Scotties an 18-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Goldsberry led the offensive onslaught going five for five with a double, two triples, five runs scored, and four RBIs. Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) and Jared Hawkins (Wathena) also had big games as Standish had three hits, two doubles, and six RBIs, while Hawkins had three hits, including an RBI double and three run home run. Josh Reynolds (Gretna, NE) had four hits and Craig Hill (Morris, OK) three hits.
In game two, HCC used a complete game from Ethan DeVader (St. Marys) and the Scottie infield turned four double plays, as the Scotties completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory. Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) gave Highland all the runs it needed with an RBI single in the first inning, and a two run home run in the third inning. Jesse Richel ((Morris, OK) also had a first inning RBI single, and Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO) added an RBI double in the fourth inning. DeVader allowed eight singles in the contest, while striking out five batters. The wins put the Scotties record at 3-5 in conference play, and 11-8 overall. The Scotties will resume play Wednesday, March 14, with a non league game versus North Central Missouri College, and resume conference play when they host Cowley County Community College on Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18.
