A new role for a local leader, following an announcement made this week by the United States Health and Human Services.
Steve Ortiz, Chairman for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, was elected Tuesday to serve as co-chair for the Health and Human Services Secretary's Tribal Advisory Committee in Washington D.C.
The Committee, composed of tribal leaders from twelve Indian Health Service regions and five at-large representatives, and two alternates, operates under HHS Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius.
The Committee works to exchange information and to provide recommendations and advice between HHS and Indian tribal governments.
Ortiz represents the Oklahoma region, comprising Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.
