(KLZA)-- Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Communications Director Dawn-Renee Smith has issued a release regarding an inmate at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution assaulting a staff member Friday.
According to the release an inmate assaulted a staff member Friday, and during an effort to restrain the inmate, he was able to strike two other staff members. All three staff members were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh.
September 2nd the prison located north of Tecumseh was placed in a lockdown status due to threats of violence against staff. Out-of-cell time, including visits and dining, were being restored gradually.
Due to information gathered by facility staff, security managers and Department of Corrections intelligence personnel, one unit was not receiving as much out-of-cell movement. The staff assault occurred in that housing unit while the inmate was being allowed access to showers and phones.
Warden Brad Hansen says he and his team are working to determine if the attack was the action of one person, or it this was a continuation of the threats from the previous weekend.
Department of Corrections Director Scott Frakes says “stopping staff assaults is my highest priority right now.”
Each assault will be addressed. An inmate may lose up to two years of good time for an assault. All reports are referred to the local county attorney to determine if charges will be filed.
