(KNZA)--Strong honors for Brown County Sheriff John Merchant. That comes as the Kansas Association of Counties awards him with the prestigious “County Official of the Year Award.” According to the KAC, the award is presented to an official who goes above and beyond the call of their everyday duties. "Well I was very, very honored when I learned that I received the award," Merchant says. " A lot of it's due to the hard work of the men and women at the Sheriff's Office and throughout the county. I guess they turned us in for all the programs, and the first aid CPR programming, and the child safety seats, and all the different programs we have in the county, and I guess they thought it was worthy of having recognition." Merchant tells MSC News he is excited about another aspect of the award: the ability to grant a scholarship to a Brown County student of his choosing. "We are very excited about that. Along with winning that award, we have the opportunity to give a $1,000 scholarship to a student in Brown County. We are really, really excited about being able to offer that type of scholarship to somebody here." The honor was presented to Merchant during the Kansas Association of Counties' annual convention held earlier this month in Wichita.
