(KAIR)--Atchison's International Forest of Friendship will be holding it's annual celebration this weekend, with events including a Parade of Flags and Frisbee golf planned for the community.
Forest of Friendship representative Diane Liebsch says the celebration will kick off Friday evening with a cocktail party on the lawn of the Amelia Earhart birthplace museum, with an appetizer type dinner served. The community is welcome to attend the event and meet some of the inductees that will be honored at the forest on Saturday.
Liebsch adds the Parade of Flags is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with children invited to come out to the forest any time after 8:30 “and choose a state or country's flag to carry, they will line all those flags up...every tree at the forest of friendship, there is well over a hundred of them, will have a flag flying by it on Saturday, it's an absolutely beautiful location, but we will carry in many of those flags in a special parade of flags.”
Each year, the celebration seeks to honor a special category of aviator, though Liebsch says this year's theme will focus on one in particular. She says that “anyone who has contributed in any way to aviation and aerospace are invited to be inducted into the Forest, and usually it's groups of 99's or family members that perhaps want to see a member of their family that flew in World War two, they might want to put their name into the sidewalk. There is always some kind of a theme, and there is always at least a few people that fit that category, and this year, the theme is “Forest and Flying”, and they will be paying special attention to Foresters. There will be some Kansas Foresters at the forest on Saturday...those people who make sure our forest's are protected.”
Registration for the Parade of Flags will begin at 8:30. For more information, you can call Liebsch at 913-426-3923 or send her an email at dliebsch@benedictine.edu.
