(KLZA)--Two inmates killed during a May 10th riot at the Tecumseh State Prison died from “blunt force” injuries to their heads.
That's according to information obtained Tuesday by the Omaha World Herald from official death certificates.
Inmates Donald Peacock and Shon Collins, both 46 years of age, died within minutes of the injuries which were inflicted with unidentified objects. Both men were serving long sentences for first degree sexual assault of children.
The time of death for each man was listed at 11:45 p-m, about nine hours after the riot started. Johnson County Attorney Julie Smith told the newspaper that it is likely each died before that. She said 11:45 is when a special corrections riot response team first saw their bodies.
During the riot inmates started fires, tore down a two-story dividing wall and ransacked cells. Two guards were assaulted and a corrections officer responded by firing a warning shot, and then shooting one inmate involved in the initial disturbance. Both of the guards assaulted were able to return to work the next day.
Autopsy reports of the two dead inmates will not be released until a grand jury investigation is completed. Grand jury investigations are required by state law when someone dies in police or prison custody. The grand jury must be impaneled within 30 days of a request.
