(KNZA)-- Federal and state officials began a preliminary damage assessment in Doniphan County Monday to determine if the county is eligible for financial assistance due to the recent heavy rains and flooding.
Doniphan County Commissioners met with officials from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management and FEMA to perform the initial assessment.
Doniphan County officials have estimated damage to public infrastructure in the county at more than one million dollars. Currently, six roads remain closed and more than 20 roads have major damage due to the recent heavy rains.
Governor Sam Brownback last month signed a disaster proclamation for forty-four Kansas counties—including Doniphan. Brownback said the proclamation will begin the process of helping the counties to identify damages and begin restoring vital infrastructure.
