(KAIR)--A new mural is now displayed on a downtown Atchison building.
The Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce officially dedicated the mural on the side of the Aunt Pearl's Attic building with a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon.
Chamber President Jacque Pregont says the idea for the mural program came from seeing similar projects in other Kansas cities. However, it was decided that the first mural should be unique to the city of Atchison. She says that “what we talked about wanting to do with the murals from the very beginning was telling our story. We wanted them to mean something and so it's David Rice Atchison who was President for a day, it's Lewis and Clark and Seaman, it's Deafy, it's a Konza indian, it's St. Benedict, it's Amelia Earhart, and then it's a conductor from the old Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad. So it does tell our story.”
Recent Benedictine College graduate Elizabeth Barrett, who majored in art at the college, was the primary artist for the project, and she says that she is “really happy that everyone likes it and that it really just finally came together after a long time, but I am really excited.”
Pregont says there are other mural projects already in the planning stages, including one that will honor musician and Atchison native Jessie Stone. The Chamber was recently awarded a $5,000 grant for the mural, and plans to have it completed within the next year.
