Disaster Declaration for Richardson County

(KLZA)-- Richardson County Commissioners Tuesday signed a Declaration of Disaster following the heavy rains of June 3rd through 5th. Damage associated with local flooding has been estimated at over 1 million dollars.

Richardson County Emergency Management Director Brian Dixon says road damages are the biggest concern. The water came down through culverts and roads so fast culverts were washed out and others were plugged forcing water over the roads, which then started eating away at the culverts.

Another issue has been a broken water line south of Dawson. Approximately 35 customers have been without water since last Thursday. Hopes are to have that line repaired today or early Wednesday.

The County, along with local cities/villages and districts within it, have made this declaration in order to request financial assistance from the State of Nebraska’s Governor’s Emergency Fund and begin the process of requesting Federal Disaster assistance. Dixon said the local declaration now goes to the state to see if the damage qualifies for relief from the Governors Emergency Fund. With other area counties also declaring a disaster, it could also go to the federal level for relief.

Highway Superintendent Scott Huppert told MSC News that his department is continuing to evaluate damage to roads and culverts, especially in areas south of Salem as well as east of Falls City along the Nemaha River and in the Preston and Strausville areas.
