(KMZA)--The winner of the open third ward Seneca City Council seat has been determined.
During a canvass of ballots from the April 7th election by the Nemaha County Commission Monday, Jim Ronnebaum was determined to be the winner with three write-in votes. The position is currently held by Galen Niehues who didn’t seek re-election
Seneca City Attorney Martin Mishler told the City Council Wednesday evening that unless Ronnebaum formally declines the position, he will be sworn in as the new 3rd Ward councilman. If he declines, Mishler said the Council will have to appoint someone to fill the open seat.
At the beginning of the meeting, City Clerk Jane Strathman administered the oath of office to Mayor Joe Mitchell, 1st Ward Councilman Ray Shinn and 2nd Ward councilman Steve Bennett. They all ran unopposed in their bid for another term during the April 7th election.
In other business, the Council voted to allow the owners of a vacant former dental clinic at 30 North 5th Street until May 6th to demolish the structure. The building has been declared a nuisance by the city. If the owners, Dr. David and Susan Bowman, don’t take action by that date, the city will demolish the building and bill the owners for the expense after the work is done.
