(KNZA)--Voters will go to the polls Tuesday to decide city and school board races. In addition, voters in Hiawatha USD 415 and Nemaha County will decide the fate of special questions.
In Atchison County, six candidates; Luke Jesnowski, Rita Hartman, David Hausman, Jack Bower, Charlie Perdue, and Mike Hein are vying for three spots on the Atchison City Commission.
There are also several contested races for spots on the USD 377 Board of Education. Barbara Chapman is facing Michael Regan for the position one spot. Joel McNerny is facing Stephanie Moore for the position three spot, and Nancy Keith, Lori Lanter, and Mike Lee are seeking the member-at-large spot on the board.
Voters in the Hiawatha school district will decide if a $9.2 million general obligation bond issue should be issued to finance improvements to the district’s three schools.
If the bond issue is approved, the projected mill levy would increase 9 mills during the first three years and then drop to 7.3 mills after the existing bonds for the middle school are paid off in 2018. That’s about a half-mill higher than the current bond and interest mill levy. The bond issue would be paid off over a 15-year period.
In Nemaha County, voters will decide if a half-cent sales tax should be imposed to support health care services in the county.
If approved, the proceeds would be split between the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca and Sabetha Community Hospital. Hospital
officials say the funding would help address revenue shortfalls tied to coming changes in federal health care funding, regulatory mandates and increasing bad debt from uninsured and underinsured customers.
If approved, the sales tax would begin July 1st of this year and sunset in ten years.
The polls will be open Tuesday from 7 in the morning until 7 in the evening.
