Highway 24 Resurfacing Project Begins

(KNZA)--A resurfacing project began Wednesday on an 11-mile stretch of U.S. 24 Highway in Jefferson and Douglas Counties.

The highway will be resurfaced from the U.S. 59 junction in Jefferson County to the K-32/U.S. 40 junction in Douglas County.

The Kansas Department of Transportation says the project will include milling of 3-inches of the existing pavement followed by the application of a new 2-inch asphalt overlay. That will be followed by all new pavement markings.

Work will begin on the east end of the project in Douglas County and crews will work west towards Jefferson County.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane for both directions, several miles at a time, along with intermittent closures of adjacent cross roads during the project.

Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage, cones and a pilot car and flagger operation. Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes maximum and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

Topeka-based Bettis Asphalt Inc. is the primary contractor on the $2.24 million project. The entire resurfacing project is scheduled for completion in mid-to-late May, weather allowing.
