(KMZA)--A dubious tradition of tax season makes it's way into the local area, with the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office receiving reports of fraudulent phone calls claiming to be made from the Internal Revenue Service.
Sheriff Rich Vernon says the calls are a scam, with one purpose intended: to rip off the personal financial information of would be victims. “In recent weeks, the Nemaha County Sheriff's Office has received calls about a scam involving the IRS,” Vernon tells MSC News. “Individuals call people and let them know, or tell them, that they owe money to the IRS and they need to be paid immediately or they will be arrested. This is a scam and the IRS never calls people, they always do it by mail.”
Vernon says if such a call is received, provide the caller with no personal information. Instead, hang up and report the attempt to local law enforcement.
