(KAIR)--Atchison County could soon be paying a higher fee to Deffenbaugh Industries, the company contracted to remove solid waste from the county transfer station.
Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says representatives from Deffenbaugh presented the Commission with the proposed rate change that is based on the consumer price index. The fee would be raised slightly, just over one percent, and Schuele says this was in the original contract with the company, but there still needs to be discussion on the timing of the increase.
Schuele adds the new rate would have the county paying a little over a dollar more per ton of waste disposed. The county is currently paying a little over $31 a ton to have their solid waste hauled to Shawnee County.
Schuele says the current rate is based off the 2012 contract with Deffenbaugh, so there has not been a single increase for the past three years.
