(KLZA)-- The annual Empty Bowls Soup Supper sponsored by Southeast Nebraska Communications Tuesday evening brought in $3,608 in donations for the Back Pack Program in the Falls City Public Schools. For a free will donation, those attending could sample as many or all of the 20 different soups offered.
The Back Pack Program sends backpacks full of food home each weekend of the school year with qualifying Falls City Public School students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. A voucher for milk, bread and eggs is also provided to each student once a month.
Those eating had a chance to vote for their favorite soup. There was a 3-ay tie for the top spot. The Falls City Booster Club Potato Soup, Falls City Travel’s Creamy Hash Brown & Hamburger and the Better Halves Club, Chicken Enchilada Soup were the favorites.
Witt says it is not too hard to find those willing to donate soup for the cause. Local restaurants, nursing homes, booster clubs and individuals all donated soup this year.
This year, 34 students are taking part in the program. The Falls City School District will be signing up families to determine eligibility for the 2015-16 school year in April.
