(KNZA)--The Hiawatha USD 415 Board of Education Monday evening approved a bid to update the 55-year-old plumbing system at the elementary school, with financing dependent on the outcome of the April 7th bond election.
On the recommendation of the Lenexa-based consulting firm P 1 Group, the Board accepted a bid of nearly $631,000 along with three alternate bids totaling just over $49,000. The alternate bids are for handicapped accessible north restrooms, a booster pump and ten drinking fountains.
The bid was well under the $791,000 that had been estimated for the for the project.
Doing the plumbing upgrades all at one time would save the district about $116,000 over having it done in four phases.
The project is included in the 9.2 million dollar bond issue to be voted on by district patrons next month. Board President Matt Sprick says the board feels the plumbing upgrades need to be done regardless of the outcome of the election and will look at other financing options if the bond issue is defeated.
Plans are to do the project this summer, which will include a new water service line to the school and replacement of the water lines in the building.
