(KNZA)--A Doniphan County water district must return a one million dollar grant awarded for a waterline construction project after missing a deadline.
Rural Water District #6 grant administrator Rita Clary informed the Doniphan County Commission Monday that the Community Development Block Grant funds must be returned to the Kansas Department of Commerce because the February 14th deadline to award a construction contract for the project wasn’t meet. Clary said construction bids for the project couldn’t be let due to high levels of nitrates in the water source.
She said Rural Water District #6 is in talks with Doniphan County Rural Water District #5 and Brown County Rural Water District #2 to obtain water. However, at the present time no funds are set aside by the Kansas Department of Commerce for the construction of waterline projects.
