(KLZA)-- More than 70 students participated in the annual DAR essay-writing contest in Falls City this year. The contest is based on historical events. This year’s topic was based on processing through Ellis Island as a young child and describing your experiences.
The winners this year include 8th graders Brody Bindle, 7th grader Brynna Bruxellas and in the 6th grade Thayer Armbruster. The essays written by these students advance to the state level. A win at state means the essay will advance to the national competition.
This year, Rachel and Brian Witt created the Education Beyond the Classroom Grant.
The grant will be used to provide the winner of the DAR Essay Contest an all expenses paid, round trip to Washington D.C. The DAR winners’ essays were submitted to a committee for judging to select the first annual winner of the Education Beyond the Classroom Grant.
Brody Bindle, son of Brian and Shawna Bindle was selected as the winner of the Washington D.C. trip. Rachel Witt presented Brody with a check for $1,824 to put towards his trip.
Rachel noted she is excited to get involved in the schools and shared her experiences with the DAR.
