Local Communities Voice Opposition To Proposed Election Change
(MSC NEWS)--Municipal and School District officials in local communities are opposing a bill in the Kansas Senate that would move city and school board elections from the spring to the fall of even numbered years.
The Senate bill, introduced Monday, would also change the elections from non-partisan to partisan.
Officials in Atchison are vocally opposing the proposal, which has been discussed, but not acted on, in recent years.
City Manager Trey Cocking says it's his belief the current election process works best for his city's residents.
On Monday evening, the Boards of Education for Hiawatha and Nemaha Central both approved resolutions opposing the legislation.
A hearing on the bill is scheduled to take place Wednesday on the Senate floor.
