(KNZA)--Brown County Commissioners have gone on record in support of the continuation of the county’s micro-loan program.
Representatives of the Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development met with the Commission Monday to urge them to continue the revolving loan program administered by HFED.
Commissioners have voiced some concerns about the program which provides low-interest loans up to $25,000 to new and existing small businesses. The program was established in 2004 with a $100,000 Community Development Block grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce.
HFED board member Nick Hrencher told Commissioners he thinks it’s a good program and helps assist with economic development in the county.
Following discussion, the Commission voted unanimously to continue support of the program.
In other business, Commissioners signed a letter of support for a federal grant the Sac and Fox Tribe plans to seek through the U.S. Department of Transportation to help with operation costs of a new transit system.
The Tribe is proposing to improve access to work, medical appointments and childcare by supplying low-income families with transportation.
