(KMZA)--The actions of a person pretending to be a police officer in the Marysville area are escalating. Marshall County authorities report the suspect targeted a third victim Wednesday afternoon, his second attempt that same day.
The suspect's activity was first reported Sunday.
The latest confirmed incident happened around 2:00, south of Marysville, on East River Road, with the suspect, behind the wheel of a white pickup truck equipped with a single red light, convincing a motorist to pull over. Authorities say the would-be-victim got away unharmed.
The first incident on Wednesday happened west of Marysville, with another driver pulled over by the sham officer, with the suspect claiming to have a search warrant while demanding to search the vehicle.
A similar incident occurred Sunday evening. In both of those incidents, the two drivers drove away after realizing the suspect, reportedly dressed in a full black uniform, including a badge, was a fake.
Marshall County Sheriff Dan Hargrave tells MSC News two other similar incidents are also possible, but not yet confirmed.
The suspect is described as 6 feet tall with brown hair and a black mustache, while his white four door truck is described as having chrome running boards with a magnetic antenna on the box of the truck.
Hargrave says while there's no indication the fake officer is armed, the public is urged to exercise caution.
Anyone who becomes suspicious during an attempted stop by law enforcement should call 911, with emergency services aware if a legitimate traffic stop is being made.
If a motorist is without a phone, they should turn on the vehicle's flashers and drive to a populated area, at a normal rate of speed, before stopping.
Anyone with information about the case should call 785-562-2343 or 785-562-3141.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Department and the Marysville Police Department are working together in the investigation.
