(KAIR)--The Leavenworth Police Department is warning residents of a new scam that has hit the area recently.
The Leavenworth Times is reporting that potential scam victims are contacted and told that they have failed to report for jury duty. They are then told they can avoid jail time by paying a bond. One reported case had the bond amount set at $5,000. The victims are told that the money will be paid back when they show up for court.
Deputy Police Chief Dan Nicodemus says that the scammers are attempting to get credit card information over the phone, and the real jury duty system does not work that way. He adds that the Leavenworth Police Department has received several reports of scam attempts, but so far, no money has been reported lost.
Nicodemus says that if anyone receives a call regarding potential jury duty and has a question on if it is legitimate, they should call either the court, or the Sheriff's Office.
