(KAIR)--Atchison city officials are moving forward with two projects designed to improve the city's water system.
City Public Works and Utilities Director Justin Pregont came before the Commission Monday afternoon to present the projects.
The first concerned the replacement of the water main, located on 21st Street, between Birch Streeet and Main Street. Pregont says the old main has been causing quite a bit of problems over the years, with six breaks in the past ten years, and water pressure for the 8-10 homes using that line has not been good.
The project's budget was $65,000, but Pregont says that total costs should not exceed $20,000. The Commission approved the project with a 5-0 vote. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Pregont also presented a plan to conduct storm water infrastructure repairs at several different locations in the city. He says the problem was brought to their attention by a sinkhole that developed in the late spring of this year at the intersection of 19th Street and Main Street. The series of pipes in that area were placed in the 1970s, and Pregont says they are usually only good for approximately thirty years. They have become completely eroded and are in serious need of replacement.
Pregont says these storm water repairs will be funded with city wastewater funds, and work should be completed by spring of next year. The Commission approved the projects with a 5-0 vote.
