(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Police Department will be getting additional radios, thanks to a federal grant.
The department has been awarded a just over $13,000 grant ( $13,192) through the Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program. The police department will provide a 20 percent match, or nearly $3,300.
Police Chief John Defore told MSC News the grant funds will be used to purchase seven handheld and three mobile 700/800 band radios. The department currently has two mobile and four handheld radios. Defore says the new radios will allow the department to have complete interoperability with all surrounding law enforcement agencies.
Governor Sam Brownback announced the 2015 JAG grant recipients on Monday. More than $1.8 million is being awarded to local and statewide criminal justice agencies and support organizations.
Brownback says the JAG program funding helps strengthen partnerships for safe communities and enhance the state’s capacity to prevent, solve and control crime.
