(KTNC)--The use of voice-based communication and entertainment technologies in vehicles is not a safe alternative for drivers. That's according to a report from the Triple-A Foundation for Traffic Safety, which recently released its findings on the implications of cognitive or mental distraction on driver performance associated with the use of those systems built into cars. The research suggests that the features may actually increase driver distraction.
Triple-A says developers should design systems that make interactions no more demanding than listening to the radio or an audiobook and limit a driver's ability to compose messages and responses beyond simple car commands.
They also say drivers who use the technology should limit themselves to tasks specific for driving, such as navigation, temperature control, and audio control.
Triple-A says the the distractions associated with the technology could easily be reduced if manufacturers wold make the voice-based interaction less complicated and easier to use.
