(KTNC)--The Pawnee City Council heard presentations from three insurance companies Monday night. The companies presented information to the council regarding property, liability, automobile, and workmen’s compensation insurance.
Pawnee City is looking for a new insurance company after their current provider, EMC, did not renew the policy with the city.
City Clerk Tammy Stephens says the driving factor in the decision is the workmen’s comp insurance. The city’s rates have risen recently after the city filed three claims in the past year.
The council took the information under advisement and is expected to make a decision on what company to go with at its October 13 meeting.
In other business, the Pawnee City Council voted to begin condemnation proceedings against a property in town that’s been deemed a nuisance.
The property at 1138 G Street was at the top of a list of 10 properties the Health Board recommended the city take action against. According to city officials, the Department of Health and Human Services has deemed the house as “not livable.”
The City Council instructed City Attorney Joe Stehlik to send a letter to the property owner, requesting he tear down the house and a shed on the property.
While there are 10 properties on the Health Board list, the city does not have the budget to deal with all of them at once. They plan to deal with one property at a time, and seek grants for housing rehab and demolition.
