(MSC News)--Kansas Lieutenant Governor Dr. Jeff Colyer traveled to both Atchison and Hiawatha Tuesday morning as part of a statewide tour.
His first stop was Atchison Medicalodge where Colyer discussed a variety of issues with the nearly two dozen seniors gathered. Among the topics covered, it was KanCare and Medicaid that received the most attention.
Colyer says the KanCare program so far seems to be fixing some of the past problems associated with Medicaid. “Before we had problems where they cut rates 10%, they were cutting people off of the Medicaid program, particularly people with disabilities,” Colyer tells MSC News. “What we're able to do is focus on getting people the right care at the time. For example, emergency room visits are down 27%.”
Colyer added that state officials are working to ensure that KanCare continues to help Kansas residents for years to come. “The future for KanCare is we're committed to taking care of people and making sure that there's adequate funding and that we get real outcomes for people, and that's what we're after.”
Once his Atchison visit wrapped up, Colyer hit the road, traveling to Hiawatha where he met with members of the public, and Kansas Farm Bureau representatives, at Gus' Restaurant.
Colyer is the running mate of Republican Governor Sam Brownback, who is seeking a second four year term, challenged by Democrat Paul Davis, and Libertarian Keen Umbehr.
