Building Trades House Going Up in Highland
(KNZA)--Once the decision was made by Highland Community College officials to move the Building Trades program from Atchison to Highland, those officials began looking for a building site to construct the next house.
Every year, the program builds a house which is then sold, with the proceeds going back into the program to build the next house. While in Atchison, the program built eight houses on a city block. With construction on that block completed and diminishing numbers of students enrolled, Highland President David Reist was interested in moving the program to Highland to provide needed housing in that community.
Timing of the decision proved to be right, as a property became available on Highway 20 entering Highland that already had the foundation poured. The College was able to acquire that property which provides a perfect showcase for the program as students under the tutelage of instructor Jim Dame work throughout the year the construct the house, which will be available for sale in the spring.
