(KNZA)--Hiawatha Fire Chief Don Koontz has resigned .
City Administrator Mike Nichols says Koontz submitted his formal resignation last Wednesday, citing personal reasons. The resignation was effective immediately.
Koontz had just been appointed as fire chief in early May. While he is resigning as fire chief, Koontz will remain with the department as a fireman.
Nichols says Hiawatha firefighters will meet on October 6th to nominate an individual to fill the remainder of Koontz’ two-year term. The recommendation will then be forwarded to the city commission, who will make the appointment. That's expected at their October 20th meeting.
In the meantime, Nichols says the department’s two assistant fire chiefs, Brian Butrick and Shawn Babb, are handling the day-to-day operations
