(KAIR)--Three suspects are in custody after an Atchison County Sheriff's Deputy observed them allegedly removing the chemical anhydrous ammonia from storage tanks in southern Muscotah.
Sheriff Jack Laurie reports that the deputy was driving through the area just before 4:00 Thursday morning when he came upon a vehicle parked near the intersection of Commercial Street and Shawnee Street. Four individuals were outside of the car and were allegedly attempting to remove the chemical from the tanks. When the deputy arrived on the scene, all four attempted to flee, but three were apprehended.
Taken into custody was 22-year-old Paige Borchert of Manhattan, 29-year-old Michael Johnson of Manhattan, and Holton resident, 37-year-old Jennifer Buskirk. Each were transported to the Atchison County Jail, where they face one count of criminal trespass, and one count of attempted possession of paraphernalia with intent to manufacture a controlled substance.
Anhydrous ammonia is one of the main ingredients used to manufacture methamphetamine.
Laurie says they are continuing to investigate the incident and will continue to look for the fourth individual at the scene, who was able to escape arrest.
