(KAIR)--Inspections on over one hundred Atchison County bridges are now complete.
According to Commission Chair Jeff Schuele, the engineering firm of Schwab-Eaton, who conducted the inspections on the county's non-fracture critical bridges, indicated to the Commission that there were some bridges that either have to have reduced load limits or need to be replaced completely.
Schuele says these results will help the Commission build a long term bridge replacement plan. He says this is important because up until now, the county has been reactive when it comes to bridge replacement, but a long term plan would allow them to make replacement a proactive process.
The county's fracture-critical bridges, which are bridges that would completely fail if one single component of the structure failed, were inspected by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
