(KTNC)--A display at the Richardson County Historical Museum this past weekend gave visitors a chance to see and appreciate the handiwork of past generations.
The museum hosted a display of two-dozen quilts that are part of the museum’s collection. According to Museum Curator JoAnn Auxier, the quilts come from some of the older families in the county and were passed down from generation to generation. some of the quilts are well over 100 years old, including one that was made in 1870.
Also included in the display were four "friendship quilts." Auxer says women would get together to make a quilt and then embroider their names in the fabric. One of those quilts dates to 1908 and another was made in 1930.
The display also included a Texas Star quilt and a log cabin quilt, with fabric that was hand-folded. Most of the quilts were hand-stitched, with one being sewn by machine.
The quilts are normally kept on beds at the museum, stacked one on top of the other, and Auxier says they wanted to give people a chance to see the quilts and the museum, which Auxier says has several displays to preserve the county's history for generations to come. She says the quilts are a reminder of a bygone era, before television, when women would get together to visit and make a quilt as a form of entertainment.
Auxier says she hopes young people will take an interest in the museum and the history of the area. The Richardson County Historical Museum is open 2:00 till 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
