Former Doniphan Co. School Added to National Register

(KNZA)--A former Doniphan County school has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kansas Historical Society has announced that the Lincoln School located at 410 North 9th Street in Elwood is among seven Kansas properties that were added to the National Register on June 27. The action brings the total number of Kansas listings on the National Register to 13-hundred, sixty-six.

The National Register of Historic Places is the country’s official list of historically significant properties.

The Lincoln School served as a school for black students from 1935 to 1954 when a U.S. Supreme Court decision ended segregation through Brown v. the Board of Education.

The building, which is owned by Riverside USD 114, is now leased to the Doniphan County Council on Aging for use as a senior citizens center. It also serves as a library.
