(KLZA)-- An idea for a weight room and fitness center added onto the north end of the competition gymnasium at the school building in Humboldt was proposed a couple of years back by the HTRS Booster Club. That seed has grown into a full-blown three-story addition to the north with classrooms, a wrestling practice facility, and a walk-way on the west side of the school.
Bids were opened June 19th with A.H.R.S. Construction of Bern submitting the apparent low bid of just over $5-million. Last week a special board meeting was held to discuss the bids and financing. Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer Superintendent Clint Kimbrough indicated that while the bids were higher than Board members had hoped, it is projects like this one that could eventually help streamline district expenses by getting down to one building.
An Ameritas Financial representative attended the meeting to discuss the school districts financing options for the addition. HTRS Board members could vote to approved covering about $1.9-million of the project with construction bonds. The Qualified Capitol Purpose Undertaking Fund could cover approximately $1.75-million of the cost and due to the strong finances of the district, the remaining $1.4-million could be covered utilizing the Building Fund.
The HTRS school district is very large now including the former Table Rock school district and the former Southeast Consolidated school district. Superintendent Kimbrough says there has not been any serious thought given to building a new school. He said while it has been mentioned in passing that is as far as it has gotten.
The new addition can be built and funded without needing to go to district patrons to receive approval for a bond issue. The project will be back on the agenda for the July 14th HTRS School Board meeting.
