(KAIR)--Atchison city officials have decided to continue to collect solid waste using their own resources, and will soon add a curbside recycling service.
City Public Works Director Justin Pregont says the city did put out a request for proposals to several solid waste collection companies, and received three bids. Of those three, two were several hundred thousand dollars a year higher than the city's budget. Though one company did submit a bid that was about a half of one percent lower.
Pregont adds that he is comfortable with the decision as it brings a certain degree of security to the solid waste collection process. He says that they know with complete certainty that the city can continue to provide collection services in house at a consistant and competitive rate. However, he feels that if they were to go with a single, outside firm, with no backup plan if something were to happen with that firm, the city would be left in a very tough spot.
Pregont says the city now has an open bid for the purchase of the new side loading collection vehicles that will be used with the new collection method. Once all bids are collected, the low bid will be selected and the process of purchasing the trucks will begin.
