(KAIR)--The Atchison VFW Post 1175 gathered Monday morning at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Atchison County to pay tribute to their fallen comrades
Over a dozen people came together to witness the ceremony, which included a twenty one gun salute and a bugler playing taps. Post Commander Les Smith says that each cemetery in Atchison County will have similar presentations throughout the day, either by his post or by the Atchison American Legion Post number six. He says they have done this every year, rotating the different cemeteries between them.
Atchison resident Carol Pennington was there to honor her late husband Paul, who was a Vietnam Veteran. She says he was not able to have the ceremony at his funeral, but she was very happy he finally got his proper military send off on Memorial Day.
Both the VFW and American Legion came together at Veterans Park at noon to perform the last ceremony together near the USS Arizona Memorial.
