(KTNC) - Mail carriers hope to have a lot more to pick up this weekend.
Saturday is the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign.
People are asked to put a bag of non-perishable food by their mailbox before the mail is delivered Saturday. Those with a post office box can leave food in blue collection barrels inside the post office.
Letter carriers will pick up the food and it will be donated to local food pantries.
This is the 22nd year for the “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign. According to Pam Donato, with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the drive originated with letter carriers, who saw the impact of hunger firsthand as they delivered mail on their routes.
Last year, the U.S. Postal Service collected more than 74 million pounds of food nationwide.
