Alcohol-Related Changes Approved in Hiawatha
04/09/2014

(KNZA)--The consumption of alcohol and cereal malt beverages will now be allowed on all city-owned properties in Hiawatha for events that have been approved by the City Commission.

The Commission Monday evening unanimously approved an ordinance amending the Municipal Code to allow for the change.

Currently, City Administrator Mike Nichols says alcohol and cereal malt beverages are only allowed at the Fisher Center.  With the change, Nichols says a formal request will still be required and the Commission must give their approval by resolution.

In a related matter, the Commission approved a resolution to allow alcohol to be brought in to specified events held by the Mud Boggers Club at the City Airport--including a benefit volleyball tournament in May.

In other business, Galen Lay with TREKK Design Group met with the commission to discuss a change order request for phase 1 of the city’s sanitary sewer system improvement project.

Lay says they originally estimated 233 tons of rock would adequately cover the alley’s the contractor is working in and rock the private  driveways affected, but now realize they need an additional 117 tons.  Lay says the contractor has already purchased the gravel.

The commission approved the change order in the amount of just over 61-hundred dollars.
