(KAIR)--Business in Atchison has been holding steady in the first few months of 2014, and officials say the future looks bright.
Atchison Community Development Director Stephanie Leif says the year has started off well with most businesses in the city seeing some significant hiring, with the closure of Anacon Foods a few months ago being really the only negative event taking place.
Leif adds that unemployment in the area has lowered, but it is still well above the state average, which is something they strive to improve as soon as possible.
Leif says the future also looks good for Atchison's downtown area. Atchison Downtown Coordinator Susan Turnbull has been working hard planning and executing a variety of different events designed to shine a spotlight on downtown vendors.
