(KAIR)--Child safety seats have been protecting kids for decades, but with so many rules regulating their use, it is possible that some parents may not be using them correctly.
Cheri Sage with Safe Kids Kansas says that about seventy to eighty percent of safety seats are being misused, and that definitely effects safety. Sage recommends that parents should start by reading the instructions that come with a new seat since there are so many different designs, it can be easy to improperly use a specific seat without knowing it.
Sage adds that the direction the seat faces while the vehicle is in motion is also important. If you child is under the age of two years, it is recommended that the seat face the rear of the vehicle. The reason for this is because most vehicle crashes occur in the front of the vehicle, and a rear facing child is more protected than one facing the front.
Sage says that even when your child is ready to face forward, it is vital to keep them restrained in the correct manner. The best thing you can do is to keep them in the five point harness as long as possible.
If you are not certain if you are using your child's safety seat correctly, Sage recommends finding a car seat technician to help. You can find a car seat program near you by going to www.kansascarseatcheck.org.
