(KAIR)--The temporary stop signs at the intersection of Fifth Street and Kansas Avenue in Atchison will soon become permanent.
During their meeting Monday afternoon, City Commissioners 4-1 in favor of removing the electric signals and replacing them with the signs, but not without some debate.
Commissioner Rita Hartman asked Police Chief Mike Wilson if there has been an increase in reckless driving through the intersection since the stop signs were placed. Wilson responded that there has been some citations issued for running the signs, but no wrecks have occurred.
Hartman said that she felt the city was going backwards by taking away more traffic signals, and this could be detrimental to attracting new businesses to the city.
Commissioner Allen Reavis said he was fine with the change, as long as the crossings located at Sixth Street and Kansas Avenue were also updated in the near future to increase safety at that intersection.
Harman cast the only no vote.
In other business, the Commission voted unanimously to accept a bid for nuisance abatement services from Fred Hysten Jr.. A bid from Tim Moore to provide mowing services for nuisance abatement was also approved.
Finally, the Commission voted 5-0 to authorize the purchase of two 72 inch mowers in the amount of $19,998 from Kansas Golf and Turf.
