(KNZA)--The suspect involved in a Friday afternoon Hiawatha pursuit is dead.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Don Hughes says 29-year-old Jack Kelley, of Saint Joseph, was pronounced dead, while under hospitalized care, on Saturday.
Kelley, a fugitive from Saint Joseph, shot himself in the head following a short stand off with area law enforcement in the 500 Block of South 7th Street.
He fled into the residential neighborhood on foot after crashing the pick-up he was driving. That came after authorities tried to stop the truck, stolen from Saint Joseph and bearing no license plates, after being alerted to Kelley's fugitive status.
The Kansas Highway Patrol, the Brown County Sheriff's Department, Hiawatha Police, Sac and Fox Police, and Saint Joseph area authorities all assisted as the incident unfolded Friday afternoon.
Hiawatha police chief John Defore says police found suspected illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia at the Hiawatha home where Kelley was found before the chase began. A 6-year-old boy at the home was taken into police custody.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports that Kelley was a suspect in a Feb. 28 home invasion in St. Joseph, as well as other crimes in Andrew County.
