Highway to be Named for Legendary Newsman
(AP) - Motorists will be able to drive on Walter Cronkite Memorial Highway in St. Joseph this spring.
A joint legislative transportation committee on Tuesday easily approved a proposal to name a section of the Belt Highway in St. Joseph after the CBS News icon, who was born in St. Joseph.
Rep. Delus Johnson, a Republican from St. Joseph, says the state transportation department is expected to have signs noting the name change in place in six to eight weeks.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports the effort was promoted by Missouri Western State University, where a display tracing Cronkite's life and career opened in November.
The renamed highway runs from a northern point at the Belt Highway's intersection with Frederick Boulevard south to the Interstate 29 interchange.
