(KNZA)--The Brown County Prevention Alliance has been awarded a $12,500 grant to implement comprehensive strategies for the prevention of underage use of alcohol and other drugs in the county.
Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore told city commissioners this week that his department will receive up to $800 of the grant funding for the purchase of a digital breathalyzer and to pay the overtime of officers for saturation patrols planned prom weekend, April 12-13th, and graduation weekend, May 17th-18th.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Department and Horton Police Department will also utilize grant funds from the Brown County Prevention Alliance for similar saturation patrols.
The Hiawatha City Commission authorized Mayor Crosby Gernon to sign an agreement with the Prevention Alliance for the acceptance of the grant funds.
