Hiawatha Chamber Holds Annual Meeting

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Chamber of Commerce annual meeting was held Thursday evening and included the presentation of several awards.
Hiawatha Thriftway was honored as the “ Business of the Year”.
The “ Volunteer of the Year” award went two local couples. They included George and Helen Melster who along with their family have provided the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner for 31 years.  In addition, receiving the award were Darryl and Elsie Monaghan, owners of the Maple Lanes Bowling Alley. 
Also a new award was handed out this year.  The "Civil Service" award was presented to Bev Sunderman who has served as the public information officer for the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging for 8 years.
The featured speaker for the evening was Ron Wilson, Director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at K-State.  Wilson produced the weekly feature Kansas Profile, which is heard on KNZA and KMZA Radio.  He talked about some rural entrepreneurs and innovators who have helped shaped Kansas Communities.
